I think that basketball was integral to his and Rowdy's relationship. They could play basketball together on the rez, which provided relief from their houses and gave them a chance to hang out together. Then, in high school, it was evident that Junior (like Rowdy) was talented at basketball, which motivated him keep playing. I'm sure the physical outlet was great for him; plus, it provided a means by which he could connect to his peers at school.
